At Big Box Containers, we believe Women’s Day is not only a time to celebrate the strength and achievements of women, but also to honour the trailblazers who break boundaries and redefine what’s possible. This year, we’re proud to shine a light on one of our own: Nozuko Jali, our first and currently only female welder.
Originally from the Eastern Cape, Nozuko joined Big Box just five months ago and has already made a lasting impression with her skill, dedication, and unwavering spirit. Her journey into welding wasn’t a conventional one, and that’s exactly what makes it so inspiring.
Nozuko studied Mechanical Engineering at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, intending to earn her diploma. But due to circumstances beyond her control, she wasn’t able to complete her qualification. Instead of giving up, she saw it as a redirection, not the end of a dream, but the start of a new path.
“I never imagined I’d be in this field,” she says. “Especially because it’s so male-dominated.” But helping her father with welding work sparked something unexpected – a deep passion and motivation to pursue a career she had never previously considered. “From that moment on, I didn’t look back.”
Today, Nozuko works side by side with our team, confidently handling heavy tools and materials, and proving every day that determination, focus, and a love for the craft can overcome any obstacle. She knows many women may feel intimidated by traditionally male-dominated industries like welding or engineering. Her message to them?
“If you stay focused, work safely, and put your mind to it, anything is possible.”
Nozuko’s story is a powerful reminder that success doesn’t always follow a straight line. Sometimes, it’s forged with grit, sparked by unexpected opportunities, and fuelled by the courage to try something new.
This Women’s Month, we celebrate Nozuko, not only for her skill, but for the strength she brings to Big Box Containers, and the example she sets for women everywhere who dare to dream differently, push boundaries, and step boldly into spaces once thought not meant for them.
